Maidstone was once a centre of industry, whose principal trades included brewing and paper making. The economy has changed over the years from predominantly heavy industry to light industry and increased service industries, and the area remains a base for the paper and packaging industry.
Maidstone’s town centre boasts the largest concentration of offices in Kent, while numerous high-tech firms and smaller industrial units fill the business parks surrounding the town. Many residents are currently employed in the retail, administrative and service sectors, with some of the town’s workforce commuting to London and other towns.
